Estherville – Funeral services for Ludie “Lucille” Martin, 109, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 23 at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with the Reverend Lynn A. Potter officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery in Estherville. She died on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 22 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home.

Lucille was born on Oct. 11, 1891 in Edge, Ark., the daughter of William Wise and Matilda Ann (Thompson) Carmichael. She attended school in Clinton County, Arkansas, graduating with honors from Clinton High School in 1912.

Following completion of high school she attended Arkansas State Teacher’s College and graduated with her teaching certificate. Later she attended the University of Arkansas. After her education, Lucille taught country school for a time.

On July 19, 1918, Lucille was united in marriage to Edgar Martin in Clinton, Ark. The family lived in Pratt, Kan.; Madison, Wis.; Fayetteville, Ark.; Hettinger and Mayfield, N.D. where Lucille was a homemaker and raised her children.

In 1961 when they retired, the couple moved to Estherville. Edgar died in November of 1971.

She enjoyed gardening, needlepoint and most especially, spending time with her family. Lucille has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center since April of 1991.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville, the Estherville Federated Club and was also the first president of the Estherville Garden Club.

Lucille is survived by two sons, Robert Paul Martin and his wife, Mary Lou of Olympia Fields, Ill. and William Donald Martin and his wife, Rita of Anaheim, Calif.; eight grandchildren: Jean Martin of Palatine, Ill., Joan Gronstal and her husband, Tom of Carroll, Nancy Anderson of Estherville, Bob Martin of Steger, Ill., Ralph Martin of Crete, Ill., John Hendrickson and his wife, Rita of Rochester, Minn., Dr. Janet Hendrickson and her husband, Scott Roos of Toledo, Ohio and Don Martin Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; 10 great grandchildren and one son-in-law, E. J. (Jerry) Hendrickson of Spirit Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Elwood Martin; one daughter, Annette Hendrickson, parents; one sister and three brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 2, 2001)
