LOCATION: Estherville, IowaArnold Joy Hoganson, the son of Henry and Marie A. (Anderson) Hoganson, was born December 5, 1912, in Gruver, Iowa. He died Friday, May 4, 2007, at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 94 years, four months and 30 days.
He graduated from Gruver High School.
On February 22, 1938, Arnold was united in marriage to Evelyn Christensen at the church parsonage in Wallingford. After their marriage, the couple made their home south of Gruver on a farm. Arnold and Evelyn lived on that same farm for sixty-nine years where they farmed and raised their family. He also worked for the ASCS office measuring farm ground. Arnold always enjoyed doing carpentry work and even after his retirement from active farming, he continued doing carpentry work until 1985. He built many homes for people in the area. One of Arnold's greatest pleasures in life was spending time visiting with family and friends.
Arnold was a very active member of Immanuel Lutheran Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Gruver, where he was a member for ninety-three years. He taught Sunday school and was a member of the church council for many years. Arnold helped in the construction of the buildings at the Ingham Lake Bible Camp.
Left to cherish Arnold's memory are his wife of 69 years, Evelyn of rural Gruver; his children, Donna Larson and her husband, Warren of Ottertail, Minnesota; Dale Hoganson and his wife, Diane of Apple Valley, Minnesota; Beverly Hartz and her husband, Dennis of Sioux City, Iowa; Janice Birkland and her husband, John of Ringsted, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Dan Larson, Jackie and Art Ostman, Mike, Jeff and Jenn Hoganson, Carmen and Justin Englert, Steve Birkland, Brian and Ellen Birkland, Aaron and Katie Birkland; eight great-grandchildren, Taylor and Kristi Larson, Arthur and Victoria Ostman, Brianna Birkland, Hope Englert, Kayley and Jack Birkland; and many nieces and nephews.
Family members preceding Arnold in death were two grandchildren, Vicki and Kristi Larson; Staci Birkland, wife of Steve; his parents; and two brothers, Hogan and Carol.
