Estherville – Funeral services for Elmer Thom, 85, of Estherville will be held at 11 a.m. on Sat. Oct. 25 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Glenn Bohmer officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery, Estherville. He died on Mon. Oct. 20, 1997 at his home.

There will be no visitation prior to the service.

He was born on August 10, 1912 in Ravenna, Neb., the son of John and Hannah (Peters) Tom. He received his education in the Ravenna schools, graduating from Ravenna High School in 1930. Following graduation he farmed near Ravenna and then sold insurance for AAL in Spencer before entering the United States Army in 1941. He served in the European Theatre during World War II.

On June 6, 1948, he was united in marriage to Margaret Kallsen from Ocheyden. The couple made their home in Estherville and were married for 40 years. Mrs. Thom died on October 29, 1988. Elmer was employed as Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Agent for 31 years. He retired in 1977 and has resided in Estherville and Mesa, Ariz.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville and a charter member of Christ Greenfield in Mesa. He served as Sunday school teacher, on many boards, supported the Lutheran Laymen’s League and the Lutheran Hour.

He is survived by sons, Jon Thom of Eden Prairie, Minn.; Larry Thom of Amarillo, Texas; daughter, Mrs. Mike (Peggy) Thom-Troutt of Dallas, Texas; brother, LeRoy Thom of Hastings and sister, Lilian Bispo of San Francisco, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one sister and three brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 24, 1997)
