J.P. Hoien, Local Farmer, Dies at 60
Jens Peter (Jim) Hoien, retired farmer, died at 8:45 a.m. yesterday at Holy Family hospital. He entered the hospital Jan. 28 after he had suffered a stroke which was followed by another stroke March 1. He had suffered from a heart ailment for the past five years. He was 60 years old.

Born Oct. 19, 1891, at Cedar Falls, Black Hawk county, he moved with his parents to Halfa. He married Edna Fuller Nov. 6, 1912, at Ledyard and the couple farmed at Halfa, near Ledyard, Ceylon and 28 years near Maple Hill, moving to Estherville a few years ago.

Mr. Hoien formerly was a member of the Dolliver Odd Fellows lodge and a member of the Maple Hill Presbyterian church, where he was an elder.

Surviving his death are his wife; two sons, Jan and Bruce Hoien of Estherville; four grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Anna Hoien of Ringsted. He also is survived by three brothers and three sisters: Soren Hoien and Mrs. Christina Nelson, of Ringsted; George of Armstrong, Iver of Edwardsburg, Mich., Mrs,. Harold Quinn of Freeborn, Minn., and Mrs. Frank Bouck of Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Hoien home, 601 North Sixth street, and at 2 pm. at the Presbyterian church here, the Rev. Thomas Melton officiating. Burial will be in Oakhill cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Hoien’s six nephews, Harvey Nelson, Dennis, Donald, Blaine and Russell Hoien, and Edward Quinn. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 14, 1952)

Hoien, all of Armstrong; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Quinn and Charles of Freeborn, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bouck and Donald of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Murl Burnside of Lake Park; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Foster of Storm Lake; Mrs. Sylvia Lewis of Madrid; Mr. and Mrs. Verne Patterson, William Patterson, Mrs. Rena Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Patterson and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Good of Luther; Mrs. Anna Balmer and Mrs. Nels Jespersen of Dolliver, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schmidte of Titonka; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Saunders of Butterfield, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stoneback and Kenneth of Fairmont, Minn.

Funeral services were held at the home, 601 North Sixth street and at the Presbyterian church on March 15, the Rev. Thomas G. Melton officiating.

Pallbearers at the funeral were Harvey Nielsen, Charles Quinn, Russell, Donald, Dennis and Blaine Hoien, all nephews of the late Mr. Hoien. Songs sung at the services were “Beyond the Sunset” and “My Jesus as Thou Wilt.” Bible text of the service was from Micah chapter six, verses six through eight.
