Mrs. Hayes [Hays] Dies Suddenly
Heart Attack Sunday is Fatal to Well Known Gruver Lady; Funeral Services Were Held This P.M.
Death struck suddenly in the Gruver vicinity again Sunday and this time claimed Mrs. William Hayes as its victim. Mrs. Hayes was 72 years old at the time of her death.

Apparently in good health Mrs. Hayes together with her husband had been enjoying a visit from her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Hayes of Des Moines, when she was stricken by a heart attack, from which she never recovered.

Mr. and Mrs. Hayes moved to Gruver in 1913, having purchased a farm on the outskirts of the town. Mrs. Hayes was an active, ambitious wife and mother with the best interests of her home and family uppermost in her thoughts at all times. She was active in the affairs of the community and church and always willing and anxious to do more than her share in whatever job was assigned her.

Mrs. Hayes, nee Lettie Stevens, was born at Dallas Center, Iowa, March 10, 1868. She was united in marriage with William Hayes on Sept. 8, 1894, at Dallas Center. They made their home in that community until moving to Gruver where they have since resided.

Surviving Mrs. Hayes are her husband and son and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held this (Tuesday) afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Hayes home and 2:00 o’clock at the Gruver Presbyterian church, the Rev. R.T. Chandler conducting the services assisted by Rev. Fred D. Sawyer. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Irwin, Ray Brannan, Henry Whitacre, Harry Weber, H.O. Miller and [line missing]. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, October 22, 1940)

Hayes Obituary
Lettie Gertrude Hayes, daughter of Thomas and Nancy Stevens was born at Dallas Center, Iowa March 10, 1868 and passed away at her home in Gruver Oct. 20, 1940 age 72 years, seven months and ten days.

She grew to womanhood in Dallas Center where she was united with the Christian church at the age of 14 years. On Sept. 8, 1894 she was united in marriage with William Hayes, to which union one son, Elbert, was born. After living for 18 years in Union and Dallas counties, they moved to Gruver in March, 1913, where they have since resided.

Besides her husband and son, Elbert, of Des Moines , two grandchildren, Fauntelle, age 13 and Elbert Jr., age 8 years, she leaves to mourn her passing one sister, Mrs. William Harris of Dallas and a brother, Will Stevens of Des Moines and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon from the home and at the Presbyterian church at 2 o’clock. Rev. Fred Sawyer of the Christian church of Estherville, assisted by Rev. T. C. Burton conducted the funeral rites. A quartet composed of Mrs. Minnie Hiles, Mrs. T.C. Burton, Frank Barber and Kenneth Goldsberry sang “Face to Face,” “We Are Going Down the Valley One by One,” and “Asleep in Jesus.”

Pallbearers were Ray Brannen, Harry Webber, Julius Ingebretson, Henry Whitacre, H.O. Miller and John Irwin.

Burial was made in the Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, October 24, 1940)
