Diptheria appeared in the family of H. and J. Peterson at the Emmet house last week and on Saturday [November 18, 1893] two little girls, aged two and seven, one from each family, succumbed to the dread disease. Several of the members of the household have been sick but are improving and no new cases are reported. The sympathy of entire town is extended to the bereaved parents in their great loss. Everything possible is being done to prevent the spread of the disease and it is thought to be checked. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, November 23, 1893)

Our people all sympathize with the families of Jens and H. Peterson in their recent bereavement. A little daughter was taken from each of the families on Saturday last by the dreaded disease, diphtheria. They were sick but a short time and it is supposed the germs of the disease were brought from Chicago as Mr. and Mrs. J. Peterson had just returned from there. No other cases are reported in the city and no further danger expected from the spread of the malady. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, November 23, 1893)
