S.W. Burg, 81, died Monday [November 15, 1947] forenoon at the home of his son, E.B. Burg, one mile south of Wallingford. He had been ill since Thanksgiving Day.

Swan William Burg was born in Sweden February 13, 1865 [per gravestone, 1866]. When nine years old he came to the United States making his home with an aunt and uncle at Red Oak, Iowa, where he received his education.

In 1888, he was united in marriage to Harriet Elizabeth Proudfoot. They made their home in Polk County where he worked in a factory until 1906, when they moved to Warren County and began to farm. In 1914 they moved to Emmet County where he continued farming. Mr. and Mrs. Burg moved to the home of their son, E.B. Burg, in 1937.

He was a member of the Methodist Church at Graettinger.

He was preceded in death by his wife on July 12, 1939, one daughter, Mrs. Gilbert Osher died in 1946, and one child died in infancy.

His survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bergstrom, Des Moines, and Mrs. Herke of Osgood, Iowa, and four sons, Charles of Emmetsburg, Raymond of Spencer, Kerry of Ruthven, and E.B. of Wallingford; also 33 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the E.B. Burg home and 2:00 in the Methodist Church at Graettinger, the Rev. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery in Estherville. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, December 18, 1947)
