John Morgan Steel
John Morgan Steel was born in Miffin county, Pennsylvania, April 6th, 1843 and died in Estherville, Ia., May 30th, 1922 at the age of 78 years 1 month and 24 days. At the age of 14 years John M. Steel with his parents came from Pennsylvania and settled in Giard Township. At the age of 19 years he was united in marriage to Amelia Holtshoer. To this union 6 children were born, 1 dying in infancy and Henry at the age of 9 years. In 1875 with his family he moved to Sac county, residing there until the death of his wife. Later moving to Storm Lake, Iowa, Buena Vista County. He resided in Storm Lake 7 years and on January 17th 1888 he was united in marriage to Lefa Jane Keller to which 10 children were born, 1 dying in infancy.Mr. Steel was Marshall for several years and Manager of the electric plant 16 years. In 1910 Mr. Steel moved with his family to Estherville, Iowa, and was a faithful worker up to the time of his death. He fired for Mr. Rhodes at the Coon block for 12 years up to the time he took sick 5 weeks ago. Mr. Steel leaves to mourn his death a beloved wife, 13 children and 18 grandchildren and 1 great grand child. The children are William F. and Ben G. of Culbert, S.Dak., Minnie C. Butler of Palms, Calif., Martha Truitt of Los Angeles, Calif., Pearl W., John Jr., Joseph, Jay, and Arthur of Estherville. Mrs. A.J. Bunday of Armstrong, Mrs. Otto Knode of Dows, Mrs. M.C. Kemp and Mrs. E., H. Mace of Estherville, Iowa. Besides his family he leaves 1 sister, Mrs. J.H. Angler of Storm Lake, Iowa.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Friday afternoon June 2nd at 3:30 p.m. Rev. Hurley officiating. Burial being made in Oak Hill Cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, June 7, 1922)
