Death of Mr. J. Phillips
Mr. J. Phillips died at the home of his son in this city Thursday, March 11th, 1909, aged 79 years.

In his death Estherville lost one of her most manly men, of true worth, a true citizen. Judah Phillips was born February 27, 1830, in Oswego, N. Y. Early in life he made his way West, residing sometime in Wisconsin, later lived in Albert Lea, Minn. In 1857 he settled in Emmet county. Those were the days of the pioneer on this part of the plains, when deer were plentiful and buffalo roamed aboard. Mr. Phillips was actively engaged in trapping and hunting, going further west in his journeying, extending into the Dakotas. Upon one of these trips his brother and his cousin were caught and drowned in the waters of the Rock River.

The Indian Troubles which are only an imagination to most of us, were reality with him, for those were the times when the Sioux put on the war paint and spread terror throughout southern Minnesota and Northwestern Iowa.. The most bloody and extensive massacre in the history of the country to that date took place in '62-68". In those trying and exciting times Mr. Phillips numbered one of the organization ' of the Iowa Northern Brigade for the defense and protection of the settlers. He was one of those who went north upon the rumors of great slaughter to the regions of New Ulm and assisted in burying the dead and caring for the wounded. There were few of the latter, the Indians did their work so relentlessly. He was able to bring home one wounded and frightened boy who was cared for in this city.

On July 5, 1862, Mr. Phillips was united in marriage to Lucy A. Clark. They resided in Estherville for ten years, when they moved to Round Lake, Minn., which place was their home for twenty years. In 1892 they returned to Estherville and resided here until the time of his decease, March 11, 1909.

Left to mourn the loss of a great husband and father, are the widow and four children, all of whom save for one son were here to attend the funeral on Sunday afternoon which was held from the Methodist church of this city. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, March 17, 1909)
