Estherville - Mass of Christian Burial for James Mason, 77, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville with Monsignor Michael Sernett as Celebrant. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery in Estherville with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville.
He died Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.
James Stephen Mason, the son of Merton and Helen (Sullivan) Mason, was born Dec. 16, 1933, in Estherville.
James received his education in Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School. He then attended Estherville Junior College and Mankato College.
On Dec. 28, 1957, he was united in marriage to Frances Johnson in Graettinger. The couple made their home in Estherville and James was employed by the City of Estherville for 42 years. James enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, American Legion, AMVETS and retired from the Iowa National Guard after 20 years of service.Left to cherish James' memory are his children, Stephen Mason and his wife, Pam, and their stepdaughter, Courtney (Dan) Decker and son, Justin; Patrick Mason and his children, Jennifer, Christopher and Clayton; Kathryn Mason; and Nicky Hallenbeck and her husband, Greg, and their daughter, Kelsey Kautz.
He has been preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter-in-law, Kim Mason; and grandson, Daniel Mason. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 5, 2011)
