August W.J. Riedel was born in Maxfield, Bremer county, Iowa, Sept. 19, 1875, removing later to Emmet county. Seeking equipment of life's duties he entered a business college in Chicago in 1894. But after a brief stay there his health failed and since December 1898, he had declined steadily. In quest of health he spent some time in Texas, but all proved unavailing. Returning to Emmet county in May he failed rapidly and passed away Wednesday, June 12, at the home of Mr. Jutting near Dolliver. His brothers and sisters were with him and did all possible for his relief and comfort.

He had received infant baptism in the Lutheran church but had a partiality for the M.E. church and for a time manifested interest in the services of that church. August had a circle of youthful acquaintances, by whom he is held in kindly remembrance.

He had requested that if possible Rev. A.R. Cuthbert, to whom he was greatly attached, should speak at his funeral. This desire was gratified. The funeral took place at the Dolliver M.E. Church, Friday June 14, conducted by Rev. Cuthbert, assisted by Rev. Harwood. The interment was in the Armstrong cemetery.
