Mrs. Mary Pickens Dies at Age of 93
Mrs. Mary Pickens, 93, of Estherville died at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday [December 28, 1960] at the Holy Family Hospital of complications due to old age. She had been ill for two months.Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at the Sternborg-Reese Chapel, the Rev. Cletus Hair and the Rev. Walter Pederson officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sternborg-Reese Funeral Home from Friday morning until time of services.
Mrs. Mary “Mollie” Elizabeth Pickens was born Oct. 26, 1867, in Sullivan County, Tenn., to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Carr. She moved with her family to Missouri and attended school in Adair County, Mo. On Oct. 30, 1881, she was married to Nathan Pickens. The couple moved to Iowa in 1916. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Pickens made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude McFarland. In 1950, after the death of Mrs. McFarland, Mrs. Pickens moved to Estherville and lived with another daughter, Mrs. Grace Marley.
Mrs. Pickens was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and of the Fellowship Tabernacle Church in Estherville.
She is survived by three sons, James of Missoula, Mont., Glen C. of Estherville and E.W. Pickens of Marshalltown, her daughter, Mrs. Marley; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, James Carr of Owasa, T.S. Carr of Unionville, Mo., and Will of Green Castle, Mo., and a sister, Mrs. Lillie Roland of Newton.
Mrs. Pickens was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, a daughter and a grandson. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 29, 1960)
