Huckaba, 80, Dies After Illness Here
Miles Ernest Huckaba, 80, a former Emmet County sheriff, died early this morning at his home in Estherville.Death was attributed to a heart condition. He had been in failing health for one and one-half years.
He was born Feb. 16, 1886, in Martinsville, Ill., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Huckaba. He received his education in Martinsville schools.
With his father, he moved to Marshall, Minn., at the age of 11. After military service in World War I, he lived for one year in Colorado before coming to Estherville.
June 29, 1921, he was married to Martha Stockburger in Estherville.
Mr. Huckaba worked as a garage mechanic for a number of years and at one time operated his own garage. He was elected Emmet County deputy sheriff for six years in 1936, followed by a six-year tenure as sheriff.
He operated a star route, 1950-55, before his retirement.
He was a 45-year member of the American Legion post and was a member of the World War I barracks in Estherville and Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife; two half-sisters, Mrs. Grace Brannon of Oakland, Calif., and Mrs. Alice Spiker of Akron, Ohio; and one half-brother, O. S. Huckaba of Ordway, Calif.
His parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Family services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, followed by 3 p.m. public services, Rev. W. H. Dischre officiating. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery. The American Legion and World War I Barracks will conduct military graveside rites.
Friends may call at Reese Funeral Home from 9 a.m. Friday until noon Saturday when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of the final rites. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 24, 1966)
