Estherville – Funeral services for Phillip E. Herum, 72, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Jerry Cosgrove officiating. Interment will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Estherville. He died on Saturday, July 20, 2002 at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today at the Henry-Olshon-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

Phillip was born on April 27, 1930 in Wallingford, the son of Raymond and Elsie (Amdahl). He graduated from Graettinger High School in Graettinger, Iowa, in 1948. He served in the United States Navy.

On July 30, 1955, Phillip was united in marriage to Mary Schacherer in Estherville. The couple spent most of their married life living in the Wallingford area. He was self-employed as a heavy equipment operator for several years. He also worked for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad for eight years.

Most recently Phillip was employed for 20 years with the Emmet County Road Maintenance Department, also with farming with his sons. He retired from Emmet County in 1992 then worked for Estherville Sand and Gravel for six years.

He enjoyed fishing as a hobby. Most especially Phillip loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Phillip was a member of the Wallingford Lutheran Church.

Phillip is survived by his wife, Mary of Wallingford; two sons, Douglas E. Herum of Estherville; Roger A. Herum and his wife, Amy of Estherville; five grandchildren; and two brothers, Ronald Herum and his wife, Donna of Estherville; and Richard Herum of Wallingford.

He was preceded in death by one infant son, Gregory, and his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wallingford Lutheran Church. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 22, 2002)
