Miss Mary Maher Dead
The death of Miss Mary Maher, who resided in Nevada township, occurred Tuesday about noon. The immediate cause of her death was paralysis of the throat, which was superinduced by a severe cold. Her death came as a surprise to her friends as Miss Maher was only taken sick Monday and died the next day.

The deceased was born in Kildare, Ireland, in 1844, and came to this country with her parents in 1852 at the age of 8 years. In 1857 the family settled in Emmet county near Mud lake, being among the first settlers of that part of the county. In 1871 they moved to Palo Alto county and settled on the farm in Nevada township. The deceased was a maiden lady and lived with her two brothers, William and Frank. She was a devout member of the Catholic church and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew her.

The funeral took place from Assumption church Wednesday forenoon, and the body interred in St. John’s cemetery. (Palo Alto Reporter, Emmetsburg, IA, April 4, 1901)

Miss Mary Maher, sister of Mrs. Anna Donahue of this city and James Maher, formerly of this place, died at the home of her brother in Palo Alto County, on Tuesday, April 2nd. Deceased came to Emmet county in 1857 and settled with her parents near Mud Lake, the family being among the first settlers in this county. She was 57 years of age at the time of her death. She will be remembered by many of the old settlers yet living in this county. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, April 10, 1901)
