Estherville – Services for Jon Egeland, 62, of Estherville, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Al Grendler officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Estherville. He died at his home on Wednesday, June 18.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville. Parish Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
He was born April 9, 1935 at Roland, to Jens and Margaret (Bevan) Egeland. He received his education in the country schools near Wallingford and graduated from Estherville High School in 1954.
On November 18, 1954, he was united in marriage to Mary Louis Opelt at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Estherville. He farmed and was employed by the City of Estherville for over twenty-eight years. He worked in the sewer department and later as head mechanic, retiring in 1992, due to ill health. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Estherville.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Estherville; daughters, Mrs. Dave (Susan) Dalen of Estherville; Mrs. Kenneth (Kathy) Enderson of Sioux Falls, S. Dak.; Mrs. Alvin (Diane) Luke of Graettinger; Mrs. Darryl (Sheila) Bortvit of Estherville; sons: Tim Egeland and wife, Patty of Estherville and Allen Egeland and wife, Teri of Estherville; 18 grandchildren; brothers: Richard Egeland of Dolliver; Donald Egeland and wife, Marilyn of Ossion; James Egeland and wife, Shirley of Spirit Lake; Bill Egeland and wife, Judy of Postville; and David Egeland and wife, Jeanne; sisters: Mary Ellen Inbody of Spirit Lake; Mrs. Jerry (Betty) Schichtel of Estherville; Phyllis Palmer of Estherville; Ruth Egeland of Keokuk; and Mrs. Richard (Carolyn) Peterson of Sioux Falls, S. Dak.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, and two brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 19, 1997)
