Blass Dies at Age 78
Herman Blass, 78, of Estherville died t 5:37 p.m. yesterday at Holy Family Hospital. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He had been ill for the past 10 days.

Herman George Blass was born Nov 25, 1888, at Early, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Blass. He received his education in the Early area schools.

Nov. 25, 1914, he was married to Marie Jensen at Superior. The couple farmed in the Superior area for three years, and then moved to Cylinder, where they farmed until 1946 before retiring and moving to Estherville.

Mr. Blass was president of the Cylinder School Board for 25 years. He was a member of the Estherville First Methodist Church and the Knights of Pythias.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Hans, of Cylinder; four daughters, Mrs. Beulah Baines of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Nick (Maxine) Hoch of Rodman, Mrs. Elsie Wager of Milford, and Mrs. Donald (Irene) Hunst of Clarion.

Also surviving are 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Chris, of Early.

Mr. Blass was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and two brothers.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Estherville, Rev. C. R. Buckwalter officiating. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Reese-Henry Funeral Home, after 9 a.m. Friday until noon Saturday, when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services.

The pallbearers, all nephews of Mr. Blass, will be Leonard Blass, Vernon Beuhler, Slatter Brockman, Fred Hansen, Raymond Blass, and Norman Blass. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 15, 1966)
