L. Peterson Dead
Died at Colfax Tuesday Morning at Seven O’Clock
A telegram was received here yesterday morning announcing the death of Lawrence Peterson at Colfax, Ia., where he had gone a few weeks ago in company with Mrs. Peterson in hopes of benefitting his health. The children here had been notified Monday afternoon of his critical condition and Clem Peterson left on the evening train for that place but did not arrive until his father had passed away. This death removes one of the oldest business men of Estherville. He came to this city twenty-three years ago and after being employed in the B. H. Pendleton lumber yard for nearly two years started in the general store business for himself and remained until a few months ago when his health began to fail. He spent nearly all of last winter at Hot Springs, Ark., but received very little benefit. He came home and spent a few weeks and then went to Colfax where he died. His ailment seemed to baffle the most eminent doctors who treated him, but it is thought that he had cancer of the stomach. Lawrence Peterson was a broadminded and generous citizen and his death is not only a sad loss to his family and friends but to the city of Estherville. He was always ready to contribute to a worthy cause and the poor did not suffer for the necessities of life when their wants were made known to him. He was 57 years of age at the time of his death and leaves a loving wife, one daughter, Miss Bessie, and five sons, Clem, Charles, Frank, Joseph and Ernest, all living at the family home in this city. The remains arrived over the M. & St. L. at 8:30 last evening and the funeral in all probability will be held in the Catholic church tomorrow. The many friends of the deceased in this city extend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, June 28, 1905)
