Young Mother Dies Suddenly Sunday P.M.
Mrs. R. V. Maloney Leaves Family of Eight Small Children – Burial Wed.
Eight small children were left motherless with the sudden death Sunday [March 11, 1934] afternoon of Mrs. R. V. Maloney, 35 at her home on North Fifth street. Death was caused by cardiac failure. Hallie Gretchen Richards was born August 8, 1898 at Nevada, Ind. As a child with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Richards she came to Valley Junction in 1904 and the following year moved to Pocahontas. She attended the schools of that place graduating in 1915. She took a prominent part in declamatory work while in high school going to the state finals where she took third place. After her graduation she taught school until her marriage at Emmetsburg on Jan. 21, 1920 to Mr. Maloney. They moved to Estherville in 1921. Mr. Maloney has been employed as a printer in the Vindicator and Republican office since that time.

Stricken by the untimely death of this loving and devoted woman are her husband, her father E.M. Richards of Pocahontas, six daughters, Theris, Patricia, Marcella, Mattie Anne, Sheila and Virginia, two sons, Michael and James. Theris is 13 and the baby Virginia 18 months old. There are also three sisters, Mrs. Alva Lemon, of Ft. Dodge, Mrs. Jas. Gilchrist of Pocahontas, Mrs. Rudolph Grinkey of Alta, and three brothers, Ray Richards of Des Moines, Jim Richards of Michigan City, Ind., and Paul of Des Plaines, Ill.

Funeral services will be held at nine o’clock tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at St. Patrick’s Catholic church with Rev. L. J. Savage officiating. Interment will be made in the Catholic cemetery.

Relatives here for the funeral are Mr. E. M Richards, Mr. and Mrs. Gilchrist of Pocahontas, Mr. and Mrs. Lemon of Ft. Dodge, Ray Richards of Des Moines, Mrs. Nicholas Detrich, Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kelly, Emmetsburg, Mrs. O. S. Osmundson, Sac City, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Cesica, Ft. Dodge. Mrs. R. V. Maloney Died Suddenly at Her Home Sunday
Mrs. R. V. Maloney died suddenly Sunday afternoon at her home in this city from heart failure. Death in this case is extremely sad as eight small children are left without a mother.

Hallie Gretchen Richards was born August 8, 1898, at Nevada, Ind. Later she moved with her parents to Valley Junction and then to Pocahontas. After her graduation from high school she taught school in Emmetsburg. On January 21, 1920, she was united in marriage to Mr. R. V. Maloney, who is employed as a printer at the Vindicator and Republican, office.

The funeral services were held this morning at St. Patrick’s church with Rev. L. J. Savage officiating.

Besides her husband she is survived by eight children, Theris, Patricia, Marcella, Mattie Anne, Sheila, Virginia, Michael and James; her father, three sisters and three brothers. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, March 14, 1934)
