Estherville Man Fatally Injured in Sunday Crash Near Wallingford
Wallingford – An 18-year-old Estherville man was fatally injured in a near head-on crash of a pickup and semi truck three miles south of Wallingford on Iowa Highway 4 at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.

Fatally injured was Timothy John Hanson, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hanson, Estherville. The drive of the semi truck, Gary Wirtz, 36, Huxley, and a passenger in the sleeper of the semi truck, Jerry Hand, 32, Ames, were taken to Holy Family Hospital, Estherville, treated and released. Hanson was alone in his pickup at the time of the crash.

According to authorities investigating the crash, Wirtz was southbound on Iowa Highway 4 when the semi truck he was driving crossed the center line and collided nearly head on with the northbound Hanson pickup.

Wirtz was charged with crossing the center line in connection with the accident, according to the Iowa Highway Patrol officials, who investigated the crash along with the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department and Estherville Police Department.

The pickup driven by Hanson was considered a total loss following the crash. Damage to the semi truck was estimated at $9,000, according to authorities. The trailer or its load of cattle were not damaged in the crash.

Services for Mr. Hanson will be 10:30 Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville, with interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville, is in charge of arrangements. A Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 14, 1977)

Estherville – Services for Timothy John Hanson, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hanson, Estherville, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Mr. Hanson was fatally injured early Sunday in a pickup-semi truck crash two miles south of Wallingford on Iowa Highway 4.

Mr. Hanson was born Feb. 11, 1959, at Estherville.

He received his education in Estherville schools and was employed at Art’s-Way Manufacturing Company, Armstrong. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Hanson is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hanson, Estherville; nine brothers, Dan Hanson, Tom Hanson, Greg Hanson, Bill Hanson, Pat Hanson, Jim Hanson, Andy Hanson, Tony Hanson and Joe Hanson, all at home; two sisters, Margaret Hanson and Janet Hanson, at home; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Weber, Emmetsburg; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hanson, Estherville.

A Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of services Tuesday. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 14, 1977)
