Two Killed in Collision
Estherville – A Ringsted woman and an Estherville man became the third and fourth fatalities in Emmet county during 1974 when their cars crashed nearly head-on 9 ¼ miles east of Estherville on Iowa Highway 9 at approximately 5:50 p.m. Thursday [October 17, 1974].

Dead are David Neil Fredericksen, 18, of Estherville and Dixie Lee Behrends, 26, of rural Ringsted. Both were pronounced dead upon arrival at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville. Both were along in their vehicles at the time of the accident.

One witness to the accident said that the 1973 pickup driven by Fredericksen, which was traveling west, veered in to the path of the eastbound car driven by Ms. Behrends.

Ms. Behrends’ 1971 car then went in to the south ditch near the point of impact and the Fredericksen pickup ended up in the eastbound lane of the highways.

Volunteers at the scene of the accident aided the Emmet County sheriff’s office by rerouting traffic one mile south around the scene of the crash. The Estherville police department assisted in the investigation of the accident.

Funeral services for Mr. Fredericksen will be 10 a.m. Monday in St. Patrick’s Church in Estherville with burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Sunday until time of services.

Mr. Fredericksen, born December 16, 1955, was a 1974 graduate of Estherville High School, was married to Lori Weaver of Estherville on September 22, 1973, and was employed by his father, Jack Fredericksen of Estherville, as a bricklayer. He was returning from a job in Algona at the time of the accident. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Fredericksen is survived by his wife, Lori, one son, Neil Jack; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fredericksen of Estherville; three sisters, Linda, Jane and Joan, all living at home; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Fredericksen of Estherville; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Joe Bueltel of Superior.
