Obituary of Franz Fisher
Franz Fisher died Monday, May 2nd at one thirty p.m. He was the father of Anton Fisher of this city. He was born in Prussia March 3rd, 1842. His father died when he was five years old and he started to work when ten years old as a cabin boy on the ocean going sailing vessels. When twenty-one sailing before the mast as a seaman and later as captain, sailing for an English Trading Co., plying between the East and West Indies and Orient every trip encircling the globe. He was united in marriage to Gertrude Fisher in 1867 at Norden, Germany. To this union there were born eight girls and eight boys of whom three girls and seven boys now survive. He continued to sail until 1880 when he came to this country to get his boys away from military conscription. He landed in New York moving to Iowa in 1889 purchasing a farm in Pocahontas county, retiring from the farm in 1908 and moving to Rolfe, Iowa. His wife, Gertrude, died in December 1921, both are now buried in the Rolfe cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 11, 1927)
