Lewis Lyman Dead
Sunday [June 10, 1893] morning this community was shocked by the news of the death of “Lew” Lyman, the city nightwatch. Although he had been sick for two or three weeks his condition was not consider dangerous until Saturday. Everything that medical skill should suggest was done to ward off death, but in vain. He continued to grow worse and in the early morning of Sunday he passed over the silent river. An upright citizen, a true friend and a loving father has gone to his reward. As an evidence of the esteem in which Mr. Lyman was held in Estherville, it is but necessary to state that the Christian church where the funeral was held on Monday was far too small to hold the throng that assembled to pay their last respects to him. He was a worthy member of this church and did what he could do to sustain it. Upon all moral questions he stood for the right, always denouncing the evil and abhorred the winking at wrong doing for policy’s sake. He was thoroughly temperate, and led a life that was above reproach. He has lived in Minnesota and Iowa about nine or ten years, and in Estherville about five years. His wife and three children survive him.

At the time of his death Mr. Lyman’s life was insured for $1,000 in the Des Moines Life Association, C. E. Rawson, manager. This amount will prove a boon to the family in their present critical condition.

Rev. Redlien preached the funeral sermon which was full of comfort and sympathy and a short review of the many noble characteristics of the deceased.

The pall bearers were A. W. Dawson, A. D. Root, T. W. Carter, Loren White, and Geo. Godden. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, June 15, 1893)
