Mrs. W. D. Markley passed away Friday, after a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church and under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. The deceased leaves a husband and two small children. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, May 14, 1896)

Obituary
Bertha Williams was born in Hardin county, April 1st, 1870, where she spent the greater portion of her childhood. April 9th, 1890 she was married to Wm. D. Markley and moved to Superior, Dickinson county the following spring. About a year ago she move with her husband to Estherville where she was living at the time of her death, May 8th, 1896. A husband and two sons are left to mourn the death of a loving and devoted wife and mother. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, May 21, 1896)
