Former Local Resident Dies
Mrs. Warren Gilliland Dies Wednesday at Cedar Falls
Word was received her today of the death of Mrs. Warren Gilliland, a former Iowa City resident, at Satori hospital in Cedar Falls, shortly after noon on Wednesday [May 8, 1940].Mrs. Gilliland was the former Ellen Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith, 1730 Muscatine avenue. She received her early education in Iowa City.
She was married to Warren Gilliland at Galena, Ill. in 1936, and later moved to Waterloo. A nine-months old son of the couple was burned to death in a fire at Cushman Heights last June 15.
Another son was born a week ago Wednesday.
Besides her infant son, Mrs. Gilliland is survived by her husband, brother, Francis Smith of Waterloo, her parents, Frank M. Smith of Iowa City, and Mrs. Anna Smith of Waterloo.
Funeral services will be held at Karns Garden chapel at Waterloo at 8 o’clock tomorrow evening. Burial will be at Estherville. (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Iowa City, IA, May 9, 1940)
Former Student of Cylinder School Passes Away
Mrs. Warren Gilliland, the former Miss Eileen Smith, dies suddenly at Waterloo.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Warren Gilliland at the Kerns chapel at Waterloo, Friday evening and at Oak Hill cemetery at Estherville Saturday afternoon.Mrs. Gilliland will be remembered to her many friends at Cylinder as Miss Eileen Smith who attended the local school and lived with her grandmother, Mrs. John Esser. She passed away at the Saritori hospital at Cedar Falls Wednesday afternoon after a brief illness.
Her age was 21. She was graduated from Cylinder school with the class of 1935, and in December 1936, she was united in marriage with Warren Gilliland at Galena, Ill. Surviving are her husband and infant son, Frank Mervin, her parents, one brother and grandmother, Mrs. John Esser. A son, Warren Mervin, preceded her in death last June. Mr. and Mrs. Fred V. West spent the weekend at Waterloo. They returned here Sunday and brought Frank Gilliland, small son of Warren Gilliland, to Estherville with them to make his future home. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, June 13, 1940)
