Rites for Dr. Ewen Monday
Dr. Stanley G. Ewen, 65, former Estherville mayor and retired dentist, died yesterday afternoon at 3:15 o’clock in Holy Family hospital following a prolonged illness.

Dr. Ewen was appointed mayor to fill out the unexpired term of the late Dan Howard serving from August 12, 1953 until Jan 1, 1954. He also served 12 years as a member of the city council, from 1934 until 1946.

Dr. Ewen came to Estherville in 1919 to begin the practice of dentistry, retiring from active practice in 1951.

Stanley G. Ewen was born April 6, 1890 at Milford. He was educated in the Milford and Iowa City schools and was graduated from the University of Iowa college of dentistry. He served in the army for 23 months during World War I, spending a year in France.

He was married May 30, 1918 at Rockford, Ill., to Myrtle Buhmeyer.

Dr. Ewen came to Estherville following his army service in August, 1919. He assumed the practice of Dr. J. I. Clinite and continued to practice until his retirement Sept. 22, 1951.

Dr. Ewen took an active part in community affairs and fraternal activities in addition to his service as mayor and councilman. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church, past commander of Maurice Doyle Post No. 94 of the American Legion, past exalted ruler of the Estherville Elk’s Lodge and a member of the North Star Lodge No. 447, A.F. and A.M. An ardent golfer, Dr. Ewen was past member of the board of directors of the Estherville Golf and Country Club.

Survivors include his widow, a daughter, Mrs. J. P. Betty of Estherville; two grandchildren, Joann and Jimmy; and four brothers, Fred Ewen of Long Beach, Calif., Cecil Ewen of Clearwater, Fla., Roscoe Ewen of Milford and Elvin Ewen of Dallas, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon at the First Presbyterian church, the Rev. Thomas G. Melton officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery. The body will not lie in state.

A memorial fund has been established in Dr. Ewen’s memory.

Active pallbearers for Dr. Ewen are L. E. Stockdale, J. E. Stockdale, Dr. H. L. McMillan, R. C. Edelen, Jno. E. Greig and Selby Broms.

Estherville dentists will act as honorary pallbearers. They are Dr. N. R. Ellsworth, Dr. William A. Bois, Dr. J. B. Osher, Dr. John L. Osgood, Dr. J. M. Fredericksen and Dr. Wendell E. Coon. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 2, 1955)
