Prominent Men are Called
Funeral Services Held Monday for C. E. Hawk and LeRoy Buckingham; Both Had Been Long Ill
Estherville mourns the passing of two well-known business men, C. E. Hawk who died Thursday night at the veterans hospital at Knoxville and LeRoy Buckingham who passed away Saturday morning at the Coleman hospital here.

Mr. Buckingham had suffered a paralytic stroke a number of years ago which had compelled him to give up his duties as manager of the Estherville Grocer company. He recovered from the affliction to some extent and continued with the company as salesman. For the past several months, however, his health had steadily grown worse.

Coming to Estherville as manager when the wholesale grocery was opened here in 1913, Mr. Buckingham held that position until his health failed and was for two years manager of the Ft. Dodge Grocery company. He had been with the Ft. Dodge grocery since a young man.

Born Oct. 1, 1886 at Wheeler, Penn., the son of William and Sarah Buckingham, he came to Iowa with his parents at an early age.

Surviving are a son George, 14, one sister, Mrs. Peter Holland, Sioux Rapids, and four brothers William and John, Humboldt; Earl, Eagle Grove and Frank, Peterborough, Canada. His wife died June 8, 1927.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Methodist church in charge of Rev. R. T. Chipperfield of Fostoria. Burial was made in Oak Hill cemetery.

The deceased man was held in universal esteem in this city which had been his home for so many years. His declining health and death was a source of great concern and regret of many kindly and sincere friends which were his.

He was a member of the Masonic and Elks lodges. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, July 23, 1940)

LeRoy Buckingham
After a long illness death came last Saturday to relieve the suffering of LeRoy Buckingham. His illness had been lasting, but after stroke back a few years his condition, was not serious but another attack might prove fatal at any time.

He had been a long patient sufferer, always kind and considerate of all. Thought more of the comforts of his friends than of himself.

Mr. Buckingham came here when the Estherville Wholesale Grocery moved to this city. He at first controlled the business in the building on the corner of Central Ave. and 8th where the building was destroyed by fire.

The business of the house increased and through his efforts the wholesale grocery building on First Ave. No. was built. The original business venture was established here in 1913.

Mr. Buckingham was 51 years of age. His wife passed some years ago. He has one son, George. Funeral services were held on Monday at the Methodist church. Interment was made in the family lot at Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, July 25, 1940)
