Mrs. John Zitterich passed away at her home in this city Friday [May 25, 1934] forenoon, following a brief illness with pneumonia. Mrs. Zitterich was stricken Tuesday and lived but a couple of days. Last spring she had been quite ill with an ailment that affected the kidneys. She rallied from this and was able to be about as usual. However, the malady weakened her and when she became ill with pneumonia she did not have the vitality to recover and peacefully passed away. She was given the best of medical and nursing care but nothing could be done to save her life.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon. Services were conducted at the house at one-thirty and at the Methodist church at two o’clock. Rev. Otis Lange, of Estherville, pastor of the German Lutheran church, officiated. Six sons of the deceased served as pall bearers. The remains were laid to rest by the side of her husband who passed away March 20, 1915. Many old friends and neighbors were in attendance at the funeral and many beautiful flowers were in evidence.
Gesina Catherine Margaret Siekman was born in Germany October 29, 1864. She was 69 years of age last fall. She spent her girlhood days in her native land and when a young lady came to the United States. In 1883 she was united in marriage to John Edward Zitterich. The ceremony was performed in Silver Lake township, Palo Alto county. Mr. and Mrs. Zitterich resided in Silver Lake for some years and later occupied the Blairgowrie farm near Osgood. They moved from there to one of the J. A. Spies farms in Emmet county. Mr. Zitterich passed away in 1915 and three years later Mrs. Zitterich and the younger children moved to Graettinger. They purchased a fine home.
Mr. and Mrs. Zitterich were the parents of eleven children, all of whom are living. They are Mrs. H. E. Michael of Estherville; Mrs. Suzanna Spoo of Minneapolis; Mrs. John Zerke of Cherokee; Albert of Albert Lea, Minn.; Louie of Jackson, Minn.; Henry of Terril; Edward of Dunnell, Minn.; John, George, and Fred of Estherville; and Jake of Graettinger. – Graettinger Times (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 30, 1934)
