Samuel Patterson Called by Death

After an illness of six months during which time he had been a great sufferer the end came peacefully and about 8:30 o’clock in the morning of May 10th he quietly breathed his last. The long struggle was ended – death had conquered.

Samuel Patterson was born in Meigs County, Ohio, August 7, 1841.

When a young man he came to Iowa and settled in Mount Vernon.

On November 4th, 1864 he was united in marriage to Mary J. Hiner in Clinton County. To this union was born eight children, Eugene Patterson, Mrs. Roy E. French and Mrs. C. L. Denison of Estherville, Miss Malowa Patterson of Gillette Grove, Iowa, George Patterson of Mitchell, South Dakota, Mrs. G. W. Temple of Eldorado, Ark., and a daughter Hattie who died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Patterson settled in Elwood, Iowa where they made their home for more than twenty years. After a residence in Ruthven of 5 years and in Spencer nine years. Mr. and Mrs. Patterson moved to Emmet County about five years ago buying a farm about one and a half miles south of Estherville.

Mr. Patterson early in life gave his heart to Jesus Christ and united with the Methodist church remaining a member of the same to the day of his death.

He was a kindly man, a good friend and respected by all who knew him. During his long illness he has been with his son Eugene. There his aged wife to whom he had been married for more than fifty years, was his constant companion.

The funeral was held from the home of Eugene Patterson on Sunday afternoon, may 13h. A large number of friends congregated to pay their tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased. Rev. Frederick F. Case D.D., delivered the funeral sermon.

The body was brought to town and then taken to Elwood, Iowa. There the interment was made. – contributed (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 30, 1917)
