Injuries Are Fatal
Broken Vertabrae from Suicide Attempt Bring Death to Otis Nelson

Otis Nelson passed away Thursday [August 26, 1943] at 2:15 p.m. at the Coleman hospital, where he had been since Wednesday evening. He was 38 years of age.

Mr. Nelson attempted to take his life Wednesday evening by hanging. He was found hanging in the garage by police officers who administered artificial respiration, and he recovered sufficiently to be taken to the Coleman hospital.

Otis A. Nelson, son of Ole and Anna Amundson Nelson, was born September 15, 1904 at Edgely, N. D. He and his family came to Estherville in 1907. A few years later they moved to Petersburg, Minn. and then to Cylinder, Iowa.

He was married December 11, 1926 at Jackson, Minn. to Pearl Salisbury. They moved to Cylinder and lived for two years and then moved to Estherville in 1938. He had been employed at the Tobin Packing Co. for the past six years.

He is survived by his wife; four children, Opal Laverne, Laurence Alvin, Darlene June and Evelyn Lucille; his mother, Mr. Anna Hamilton; two brothers, Nornce Nelson of Cedar Rapids and Sibert Nelson of Watertown, S.D., and two sisters, Mrs. Delbert Johnson of Rolfe, and Mrs. Melvin Hall of Portland, Oregon.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Sternborg funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Willard Sawyer sang a solo, accompanied by Mrs. Charles Robinson. The Rev. J. M. Kennedy officiated.

Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, September 2, 1943)
