Mrs. Carrie Nelson, 95, Was Born in Norway
Mrs. Carrie Nelson, 95, resident of Estherville for many years died June 12 at the home of her son, Lewis S. Nelson, in Minneapolis.
Mrs. Nelson was born near Oslo, Norway on March 17, 1861. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Norway. She came to America with friends when she was 18 years old and first settled in Chicago.
While working there she also was able to bring her mother, sister, niece and nephew to America. From Chicago she moved to Five Points, Wisc., and while living there she was united in marriage to Nels P. Nelson, Dec. 18, 1884.
Six children were born to the couple and all were born in a pioneer log cabin in which the Nelsons had their first home.
After 15 years in Wisconsin, the Nelsons moved to Motley, Minn., where they lived seven years, then Lamoni, Iowa for four years and then to Estherville. For the past 15 years Mrs. Nelson has lived with her youngest son, Lewis and his wife in Minneapolis.
Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Edwin O. and Albert E. She is survived by four sons, Phillip D. Nelson of Antigo, Wisc., Oscar A. Nelson of Syracuse, N.Y.; Ferd T. Nelson of Estherville and Lewis S. of Minneapolis, 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Last rites were conducted at the Sternborg Funeral Home on June 15 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. R. A. Olsen of Palestine Lutheran Church in charge. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Brown, Eddie Kinnard, Claire Nelson, Floyd Nelson, Oscar Isaacs and E. L. Burdette. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 21, 1956)
