Mary Ann Hutson was born in Lincolnshire, England on December 5, 1834. At the age of four years she came with her parents to America, where they settled in the state of Michigan. After a residence of eleven years they moved to Wisconsin in 1849. On September 17th, 1855 she was married to Martin B. Crumb. Two children were born to them: Mrs. Mary E. Hudson of Ottumwa, Iowa; and Mrs. Martin A. Izer of Estherville, Iowa, with whom she has made her home ever since her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Crumb came to Iowa in September 1864, and settled in Emmet County on a homestead 4½ miles north of Estherville. During this period they experienced many hardships and privations of pioneer life. In 1882 they moved to Estherville which has ever since continued to be her place of residence.

Mrs. Crumb was of a family of 10 children, but two of whom survive her: a brother, William Hutson, of Elkhart, Indiana; and a sister, Mrs. H. H. Dickinson of Edgerton, Wisconsin. Her husband passed away 18 years ago. In addition to her two children who survive her there are also 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Crumb united with the Methodist church early in life and continued her membership till death. She was of a quiet and retiring disposition. She was a faithful wife, a devoted mother, a good friend to all who knew her. She was one of the oldest residents of this community and respected by all.

Her health had been quite good for a year past, but on last Saturday morning she was taken ill suddenly, and suffered greatly until her decease on Tuesday night at the ripe old age of 91. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Izer, at which place the funeral services were held, and was laid to rest beside her husband at Oak Hill cemetery.
