Illness Fatal to H.S. Boy
Jan Larsen Dies at Rochester
Jan Larsen, 16, well known and popular high school senior, died this morning at 7 o’clock at Colonial hospital in Rochester.

Jan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Larsen, was taken to the Mayo clinic at Rochester on May 13 and later underwent an operation for the removal of his spleen His condition was reported as improved by relatives here earlier in the week but he had been seriously ill since his hospitalization.

He was born Nov. 18, 1934, and lived all his life in Estherville.

Jan was active in high school circles where he participated in music, dramatics and athletics and was the president-elect of Hi-Y, high school Y.M.C.A. organization. He also was prominent in youth activities of the Methodist church and sang in the church choir.

During his year in high school Jan played in the high school band, sang in various vocal music groups and last years was a member of the trombone quartet and had a role in the one-act play which won top honors in the state high school speech association contest.

He was a member of the varsity football and basketball squads during the past year and won his letter in football as an end. He also competed in track and was a letter winner in that sport. It was during the current track season that Jan became ill.

Walter B. Hammer, high school principal, today said Jan “was a fine school citizen. When he had a job to do he followed through on it and accepted the responsibility of seeing that it was done as it should be.”

Survivors include his parents, one sister, Lynne, who will be a freshman in high school this coming school year; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Burt and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Larsen of Estherville.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed this afternoon. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 13, 1951)
