Mrs. J. T. Johnston, 83, well known and dearly beloved Estherville woman died at the home of her son, Attorney Wm. S. Johnston at 6 a.m. today. She had been seriously ill only since Sunday although her health had been failing for a number of years. Mr. Johnston passed away March 6, 1937.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnston came to Estherville in 1894 from Dows. Both had been former residents of New York City and were married there on May 30, 1882. They came west to Manchester, Iowa, shortly after their marriage.
Mrs. Johnston whose maiden name was Jane Taylor was born on July 8, 1856 at Castle Comer, county Kilkenny, Ireland, the daughter of Samuel and Jane Taylor. The family came to American when Jane was a young girl.
Two of the three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnston died in infancy and youth, one son, Wm. Johnston, and three grandchildren, Margaret Jane, James and Elaine Johnston, Estherville, survive.
Funeral services will be held at the son’s home at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Rev. Fred Ortmeyer of the Methodist Episcopal church of which the deceased woman had been an earnest and faithful member for many years, will be in charge. There will be no formal church service because of other funeral rites in the edifice that afternoon. Interment will be made beside her husband in the East Side [Oak Hill] cemetery. Mrs. J. T. Johnston, pioneer resident of Estherville, died this morning at the home of her son, W. S. Johnston. She had been ill for some time.Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the W. J. Johnston home, with the Rev. F. W. Ortmeyer officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
