Mrs. E. W. Johnson Died in Chicago
Former Estherville Woman and Well Known to Many of Our People – Burial Here
Mrs. Emerson W. Johnson died in a hospital in Chicago early Tuesday [October 7, 1924] morning following an operation for gall stones performed ten days ago. The news was a shock to her relatives in Estherville as word had been received the day before that she was getting along nicely. Mrs. Johnson was well known in this city, having resided on the west side for many years but recently moving to Chicago where Mr. Johnson had employment. She visited her brother, Robert Penn, in this city in July and August. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Penn of Graettinger. The remains will be brought her for burial. She was fifty-two years of age. Estherville friends sympathize with the relatives in their time of bereavement. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, October 8, 1924)

Isabella S. Penn was born in Paxton, Scotland, May 2, 1872. When about 12 years old she came with her parents to this country and made her home on a farm in Jack Creek township, Emmet county. Her early years passed without particular incident. On July 10, 1898, she was married to Emerson Johnson. Five children were born to them, four of whom are still living: Clarence, Margaret, Eleanor and Gladys. Their fourth child, Charles, died at the age of three years. Soon after their marriage they moved to Michigan where they made their home for about two years. Returning to Emmet county they continued their residence here until about a year ago when they moved to Chicago. She was well known in Estherville where they resided for twenty-two years. She is survived by her father and mother and four sisters: Mrs. J. C. Molison of Spencer; Mrs. N. A. Hanlin of Sioux Falls, So. Dak.; Mrs. S. R. Crumine of Estherville and Mrs. John Swift of Graettinger. Also two brothers, William Penn of Olivet, So. Dak., and Robert Penn of Estherville. In addition are the members of her family, her husband and children. Early in life she was a member of the Presbyterian church. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters. During her long residence here she acquired a large circle of friends many of whom were present to attest their appreciation of her virtues and express their sorrow at her passing. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Estherville, Iowa, on Thursday afternoon, October 9th. Interment took place at the Oak Hill cemetery. Emerson Johnson and son, Clarence, returned Friday evening to their home in Chicago. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, October 15, 1924)
