The little two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Everts died Tuesday [January 10, 1899] morning of bowel trouble. Funeral services will be held from the Lutheran church today and the little body laid to rest in the West Side cemetery. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, January 12, 1899)

Melvin Gilbert, aged two and one-half years and eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Everts, died at three o’clock Tuesday morning of bowel trouble. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two o’clock at the Lutheran church. The parents have the heartfelt sympathy of this community in their hour of sorrow.
