A pioneer is Gone
John Amundson, Sr., died at his home in Swan Lake township Sunday [June 18, 1905] morning at two o’clock after an illness of nearly three months of heart trouble and old age. He was seventy-seven years and had resided in Emmet county over forty years coming here from Allamakee county in 1864. ten years ago he had a stroke of paralysis and since that time had been gradually failing until six weeks ago when he was taken to his bed. His death removes one of the oldest settlers of Emmet county. He had seen this county change from a vast plane traversed by buffalo to a rich farming and well settled community.Seven children are left to mourn his death. They are: Mrs. Gilfillian of Minneapolis, Dr. O. C. Amundson, of Vinita, I.T., Mrs. Gilbert Gilbertson, Bessie Amundson, Ammon Amundson and H. J. Amundson of Swan Lake township and John Amundson, Jr., of this city.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the farm house in Swan Lake township and the remains interred in the cemetery in that township. [Cemetery Records indicate burial at Oak Hill] (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, June 21, 1905)
