Mrs. Samuel Zerke
Mrs. Samuel Zerke, 84, long-time resident of Emmet county, died at her home south of Estherville Sunday [March 12, 1939] evening at 10 o’clock. In poor health for the past ten years, Mrs. Zerke was stricken Saturday evening.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2:30 in the Immanuel Lutheran church, with the Rev. Otis Lang officiating. Interment was in the Oak Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Zerke was born January 6, 1855 in the province of Posea in Germany. She was united in marriage to Samuel Zerke on October 23, 1876, coming to America in 1880. The couple first settled in Bayfield, Iowa.

They lived in Nichols and at Lone Tree in Johnson county before coming to Emmet county in 1897. Mr. Zerke preceded his wife in death several years ago.

Surviving Mrs. Zerke are five daughters, Mrs. Elbert Heiman, Mrs. John Spoo, and Mrs. Fred Zitterich, of Estherville, and Mrs. Earl Studer of Faribault, Minn., and Mrs. William Spoo of Terril; two sons, John of Estherville and Herman at home; two brothers, two sisters and several grandchildren. Mrs. Rosie Zerke, 84, widow of Samuel Zerke, passed away Sunday night at her home south of Estherville.

Mrs. Zerke was born in Germany January 6, 1885 [1855], coming to America in 1880 with her husband and settling in Iowa. The past 44 years she lived in the vicinity of Estherville.

She is survived by two sons, John of Estherville and Herman at home, and five daughters, Ms. Albert Heiman, Mrs. Fred Zitterich, and Mrs. John Spoo of Estherville; Mrs. Earl Studder of Faribault, Minn., and Mrs. Will Spoo of Terril.

Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Tillie Beek living in Colorado and Mrs. Pete Peters living in Nebraska; two brothers, John Apolius and Emil Apolius also living in Nebraska.

Others left to mourn her death are 36 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, two sisters and two brothers. Mr. Zerke passed away two and one-half years ago. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, March 14, 1939)
