Mrs. D. E. Quade Dies of Burns
Clothing is Burned from Body
Uses Kerosene to Kindle Fire – Funeral Services This Afternoon from M. E. Church

The explosion of a can of kerosene was the cause of another death Saturday [May 11, 1935] night. Mrs. D. E. Quade was fatally burned at her home on North Ninth street when the oil can exploded as she was pouring oil on a smoldering fire in the kitchen range. Mrs. Quade was thrown out of the house and onto the porch. She rose from the floor of the porch and ran screaming out onto the yard.

Neighbors upon hearing her screams grabbed rugs and blankets and wrapped her in them, extinguishing the flames. All her clothing was burned off of her and her body was severely burned but with the aid of neighbors she walked to the Coleman hospital a distance of about a half of a block. Her death occurred about 10 o’clock that night.

Miss Josephine Handeland, Mrs. George Amdal and Jake Johnson were among the first to reach Mrs. Quade. The fire company was called immediately and the fire in the house, which threatened to destroy the home, was soon extinguished.

Mr. Quade, who is employed by the state highway commission, was working when the accident happened. He was notified and arrived home a short time after Mrs. Quade was taken to the hospital. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Clem Howe, of Des Moines, who arrived in Estherville Sunday morning, also one sister, Mrs. Luella Deobold, and one brother, Henry Ebner of Tonica, Ill.

Mrs. Quade was born August 7, 1878, in LaSalle county, Ill., the daughter of Andrew and Margaret Ebner. She was married Jan. 9, 1906, to Daniel E. Quade at Tonica, Ill., and moved to Estherville with her husband and daughter in 1921.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the home and at the Methodist Episcopal church with the Rev. F. W. Ortmeyer officiating. Burial will be in Oakhill cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, May 14, 1935)
