Adelaide Nichols Service Saturday

Henriette Adelaide Nichols, 82, who died March 21, 1973, at Good Samaritan Center, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery with Father Bryce Hunt of Grace Episcopal Church officiating. The Order of Eastern Star will also hold graveside rites. Friends may call at Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville, today (Friday) and until 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Adelaide Nichols, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Nichols, was born Sept. 19, 1890, in Levinton, N.D., and came to Estherville with her family as a young girl. After graduation from Estherville High School, she was graduated from the University of Minnesota and took graduate work at the University of Chicago. She taught school at various places, including Estherville and Idaho, and served as high school principal at Rugby, N.D.

After World War I, Miss Nichols returned to Estherville and became associated with her father, who was publisher of Emmet County Republican, which was later consolidated into the Vindicator-Republican. After his death she took over the newspaper until it was sold in 1944 to the Daily News. Miss Nichols kept her printing equipment and began her own job shop.

She always had an interest in animals and for 15 years raised Airedale dogs and Morgan horses, entering them in shows where they won many honors.

She served as secretary of the Emmet County Board of Social Welfare, was a charter member of Wa-Tan-Ye, past matron of Eastern Star and 50-year member of Pythian Sisters, the Grace Episcopal Church, Chamber of Commerce, Estherville Saddle Club and the Original Hawkeye Saddle Club.

Survivors include one nephew, William Deming of North Bend, Washington; and two nieces, Mrs. James (Catherine) Baldwin and Mrs. Irwin S. (Georgia) Kelly, both of Spencer. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 23, 1973)
