The eleven [s/b nine] year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lucas is at the city hospital in a very critical condition. He had an aggravated attack of appendicitis and an operation was the only hopes of saving his life. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, September 23, 1908)

Owen Hughes Lucas Could Not Survive Operation
Funeral Was Held Friday
Underwent Operation for Appendicitis and Died Wednesday – Son of John LucasOwen Hughes, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lucas, of this city died at the City Hospital Wednesday [September 23, 1908] evening at nine o’clock after an operation for appendicitis. He was operated upon Friday evening and lived five days after the operation was performed. After the operation the doctors had little hopes of his recovery. The appendix had broken evidently when he was first taken sick Thursday night and the pus poisoned his system. Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon and the remains interred in the East Side Cemetery where Mr. and Mrs. Lucas have two other children buried. Owen was an exceptionally bright boy and a general favorite among his associates. He was almost ten years of age at the time of his death.

Owen Lucas Dead
Owen Lucas, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lucas died at the City hospital Wednesday night of last week from an attack of appendicitis. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church Friday afternoon and the body buried in Oak Hill Cemetery [S/B East Side Cemetery]. Deceased was only a few months past nine years of age and had only been sick a little over a week. He had submitted to an operation but the ailment had progressed too far. The family have the heartfelt sympathy of the community.The funeral was largely attended, all of the pupils in his grade and the teachers attending in a body. There were several relatives and friends from out of town at the funeral. The floral offerings were very fine. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, September 30, 1908)
