Maria Pingrey, Former Teacher, Passes Away
Was Superintendent of Local Schools

Marie Pingrey, veteran Estherville school teacher and administrator, died at 3:30 a.m. Monday at the Pingrey home, 1009 Second avenue north.Miss Pingrey, 85, taught for 53 years, most of the time in the public schools of Iowa, before her retirement. She and two sisters, Jennie and Lucy, retired the same year and made their home in Estherville on North Seventh street before moving to their present home on Second ave. north. Lucy preceded Maria in death. At the time of the retirement of the three sisters, Jennie was teaching at Lewis, Iowa, Lucy at Charles City and Maria at Correctionville.
Miss Pingrey was born February 18, 1866, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amos A. Pingrey. She attended Hillsdale college, Hillsdale, Mich., for two years and took summer school work at Iowa State Teachers college. She received her B.A. degree from Colorado State Teachers’ college at Greeley.
Included in her 53 years of active school work were teaching positions in Emmet county rural schools, Armstrong, Winnebago college, Winnebago, Minn., Estherville high school, county superintendent of Emmet county for seven years, superintendent of schools at Graettinger and Des Moines township near Rolfe, junior high school principal at Washington, Iowa, junior high school principal at Spencer, high school principal and normal training critic teacher at Correctionville.
Her father was a former superintendent of schools, Estherville. (Graettinger Times, Graettinger, IA, December 20, 1951)
