F. H. Rhodes, Old Resident of This City Passes Away
After a long illness, Frank H. Rhodes, a pioneer business man and banker, passed away at his home in this city on Monday last. Mr. Rhodes had been suffering for a long time from a disease that seemed to be gradually taking his vitality. Some two weeks ago it was thought the end had come. He survived this attack and seemed to improve. His strength has been failing, however, and each day saw him weaker than the day before.

Mr. Rhodes came to this city in 1885 and engaged in the mercantile business on the site of the Gardston hotel. He occupied the lot about where the Gardston tailor shop is now located. For years he carried on a successful business there and as one would say, grew up with the city.

In his early day he was interested in many of the clean athletic sports of the city and at one time managed one of the fastest base ball teams Estherville ever had. He was always an ardent supporter of the Chamber of Commerce and gave freely to every project that was of interest to this city,.

Frank H. Rhodes was born in Wisconsin October 26, 1850. He came to this city in ’85 and has resided here since that time. He has reared a family among us and has educated them in our schools.

After leaving the mercantile business he engaged in the banking business and in later life was connected with a loan and insurance company he organized.

The funeral services will be held in the Presbyterian church at 2:30 Thursday afternoon. The services will be in charge of the Elks lodge. The members of that organization are requested to meet at the lodge rooms at two o’clock. The pall bearers are: Geo. Shadle, Alex Johnston, Dr. W. P. Galloway, A. O. Peterson, J. W. Morse and John Hanson.

The business will close from 2:30 until 3:30 for the services. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, February 10, 1932)
