Inquest Jury Clears Death Driver
Car Strikes C. R. Barlow and Causes Death
Funeral services for Clarence R. Barlow, who was killed when struck by an automobile near Lockport, Ill., were held Sunday afternoon at the Baptist church, the rev. F. Yearnd in charge. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery. Selections were given by a male quartet, consisting of Louis Obeye, Haviland Lucas, Clyde Hawk, and Merlan Croson, and mixed quartet consisting of Ruth Nourse, Emma Obeye, Clyde Hawk, and Louis Obeye.

According to the report, made to the sheriff’s office at Lockport, Mr. Barlow was struck and killed by an automobile driven by Carolos C. Morrow, of Joliet, Ill. Mr. Barlow, it is claimed, was walking north of Lockport when the accident occurred at 7:30 o’clock Wednesday evening. Morrow said that he was driving along at a moderate rate of speed because of the rain and wet pavement.

Blinded By Lights
About four miles north of Lockport he claims there was a care coming toward him so that he could not see Mr. Barlow, who was walking on the concrete on the right side of the pavement.

Mr. Barlow’s skull was fractured. He was taken at once to a physician but life could not be revived. A coroner’s inquest was held Friday morning at Lockport and the coroner’s jury found that death was a result of an unavoidable accident.

Is Identified
The body was taken to Clarence Miller, undertaker in Lockport, who found papers in Mr. Barlow’s clothes which identified him and enabled authorities to obtain his address. His father, J. L. Barlow, was notified of the accident. Arthur Barlow went to Lockport, and was present at the inquest Friday morning. He returned with the body to Estherville Saturday morning.

Clarence R. Barlow was born Nov. 9, 1905, at Wallingford, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Barlow. Most of his life was spent in Estherville. For several years he was employed by the Rock Island railroad. The last few years he had operated a battery station.

Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Barlow, his death is mourned by three brothers, Milton, Arthur, and Carl, and four sisters, Mrs. T. S. Zenor, Mrs. Joe Sifrit, and Ruby and Maybelle. (Estherville News, Estherville, IA, April 18, 1929)
