Marie Mathieu Opelt, 1905-1984

ESTHERVILLE - Mrs. Edward (Marie) Opelt, 78, died Friday, May 25, at Rosewood Manor in Estherville. Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Al Grendler officiating. Burial was at St. Patrick's cemetery.

Opelt was born July 19, 1905 at Howard, S.D., to Charles and Maude Mathieu. She received her education at schools in Howard and Gettysburg, S.D.

On February 20, 1928 she married Edward Opelt at Gettysburg. They farmed in the Gettysburg area until 1937, when they moved to the Estherville area. They retired from farming in 1953 and moved to Estherville. Mr. Opelt died June 2, 1982.

Opelt was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where she was also a member of the altar and rosary societies.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dale (Doris) Wycoff and Mrs. John (Mary) Egeland, both of Estherville; a son, John, of Salona Beach, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Newton Gillespie, Milo, Ia.; and two brothers, Floyd and Milton, both of Thief River Falls, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Alice Lundgren, a grandson Mark Lundgren, her parents, a twin sister, another sister, and one brother.
