LEMUEL IRWIN DIES THURSDAY
Burial Made in East Side Cemetery Sunday

Gruver, Iowa, Feb. 16 [1932]--Lemuel Irwin died at the home of his son John in Gruver last Thursday evening after an illness of several weeks. He was 87 years and two months old at the time of his death.

Mr. Irwin is the last of a family of eleven children. He was born in Mercer county, Pa., on Dec. 9, 1844. At the age of seven years he came to Bellevue, Iowa, with his parents and grew to young manhood at that place.

On Feb. 13, 1869 he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel Simmons. Ten children were born to this union. Mr. Irwin spent ten years of his early married life on a farm near Ponca, Nebr. He moved to Emmet county in 1890 when he purchased and improved the section of land where Gruver is now located.

Mr. Irwin consecrated his life to the Lord at an early age and united with the Presbyterian church and for many years served as an elder in his church.

An extended eulogy would be out of harmony with his modest wishes. Such a life is its own eulogy.

He retired from active farm life in 1905 when he came to Estherville and made his home on South 8th street until the death of his wife in 1917.

Mr. Irwin is preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Fanny Goldsberry and three infant children, and is survived by three sons and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Pierce of San Pedro, Calif., Mrs. Alice Nelson of Gridley, J. C. Irwin and Mrs. Anna Brood of Gruver, William of Pickford, Mich., and Asa of Milwaukee, Wis. He leaves also 30 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his passing.

Rev. Page preached the funeral sermon at the Gruver Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2:00, and the body was laid to rest beside his wife in the East Side cemetery. Six grandsons Wilbur Brood, Peter Brood, Floyd Goldsberry, Arthur Irwin, Kenneth Nelson and Wallace Nelson acted as pall bearers.
