Sorrow has come to the home of J. W. Hankins. The angel of death has taken the beloved wife and mother. Sorrow was cast over our neighborhood last Friday [10 Nov. 1899] when it was heard that Mrs. Hankins had passed away. She was sick less than a week and was a constant sufferer. Mrs. Hankins was 47 years of age and was the mother of twelve children, nine of whom are living and with the bereaved husband and other sorrowing friends mourn her loss. Deceased was a member of the M. E. church, always had a kind word for everyone, and her cheerful manner and loving disposition won her friends wherever she went. Sunday morning a short service was held at the house conducted by Rev. Heiserman, and the hymn "Meet Me There" was sung as had been requested by the deceased. Afterward the funeral procession went to Estherville M. E. church where the sermon was preached by Rev. Southwell and the remains interred in the Oak Hill cemetery. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.

Relatives present from a distance were an aged father, two sisters and a brother of the deceased, viz.: A. W. Holland, Mrs. Frank McGohn, of Danville, Iowa, Mrs. B. F. Holland, Kimbra [Kimball?] Minnesota, and D. M. Holland, of Worthington, Minn. and Mrs. Laura Kananze and little nephew of Ottumwa. The little boy is a grandson of Mrs. Hankins.
