Stephen Berg Passes Away at North Dakota, Was Born and Grew to Manhood in This County--Brought Here For Burial

Henry Stephen Berg, son of Mrs. T. O. Berg of this city, passed away at his home in Hampden, North Dakota, on Friday, October 12 [1923], the cause of his death being high blood pressure.

Mr. Berg was born on the Berg homestead three miles south of this city, on October 19, 1874, and resided there with his parents until grown to young manhood. He received his education at the home [Berg] school and after finishing the work offered there took up high school and college work at Northwood, Iowa.

In 1900 together with his twin brother, Oscar, he went to Grafton, North Dakota, and worked for his brother Martin who was engaged in the mercantile business and remained there until 1911 when with his twin brother he moved to Hampden, North Dakota, and purchased a general merchandise store which they have conducted very successfully since that time.

Seven years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Myhrn of Grand Forks. To this union three children were born: Sidney, now six yers old, Morris, four years, and Carl, two. These with his wife, his mother, Mrs. T. O. Berg of this city, brothers, Martin of Grafton, N. D., Lewis of Fairmont, Minn., Oscar of Hampden, N. D., and sisters the Misses Samantha and Serena of this city survive him. The father died about five years ago.

Mr. Berg was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and remained a faithful member of that church his entire life. He was of a quiet and kindly disposition and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was a dutiful son, kind and loving husband, father and brother.

Services were held this afternoon at the home of his mother at twelve thirty, and at the Lutheran church in this city at one, and burial made at the Wallingford cemetery. Rev. S. A. Berge of Estherville was in charge of all the services. Special music was rendered by a mixed quartette.

The pall bearers, old time friends of the deceased, were: O. N. Refsell and Jacob Jacobson of this city, Carl Peterson, Asher Peterson and Clarence Skattebo of Wallingford and Martin Myhre of Graettinger.

Those from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Berg and son, Howard, Mrs. Stephen Berg and son Earl of Hampden, N. D., Mrs. H. K. Groth of Minneapolis, and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Berg and family and Mr. and. Mrs. Arthur Berg of Fairmont, Minn.
