Death of James Curran

James Curran an old and respected citizen of Whitewater Township, died on Tuesday morning, March 16th, 1880, at the advanced age of 79 years.

Mr. Curran was born in the county of Wexford, Ireland in the year 1800 and emigrated from his native land to Canada East in 1827, and from thence went to Washington, D. C. in 1829, and by the way, had the honor of shaking hands with Gen. Jackson at a reception held at the time of his second election to the presidency. From Washington he went to Newry, Pa., where he was married to Eliza Shirley. In 1843 he came to Iowa, and located in Whitewater Township, Dubuque County, where he resided up to the time of his death. His wife and five children survive him. The funeral obsequies took place at the Monastery, on St. Patrick’s Day, and was largely attended. Peace to his ashes.
