Vera H. “Tootie” Medinger, 98, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at Maquoketa Care Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, October 25, 2021, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Preston, Iowa.

Vera Hazel Eckelberg was born on April 9, 1923 in rural Spragueville, Iowa, to John and Sophia (Wink) Eckelberg. She attended North Bend Country School and was the oldest living former student of the school until her passing. She married Clarence Medinger on June 21, 1941 in Missouri. A daughter, Jan, was born to this union. Clarence died on September 7, 1991.

After her marriage, “Tootie” and Clarence lived Rock Island, Illinois for a year. They then moved to a farm north of Spragueville for five years, and later farmed west of of Preston for 20 years. In 1961, they moved to Grand Mound and purchased what became known as “Medinger’s Tap and Grill”. They owned and operated the business for 20 years and retired to Maquoketa in 1981.

“Tootie” was an avid crocheter and had crocheted thousands of family name plates as well as various other items including tablecloths and bedspreads.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Ardo Schmidt of Preston, IA; 3 grandchildren, Rick (Kathy) Schmidt, Kurt (Ann) Schmidt, and Bryce (Jill) Schmidt; 1 grandson-in-law, Jeffrey Hoffmann; 5 great-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a granddaughter Lori Hoffmann, brother Ives Eckelberg, and sisters Dorothy Engel, Lucille Marlowe and Marcella Seiler.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Vera H. “Tootie” Medinger memorial fund has been established.
